Chuck Palahniuk
"What is the issue that is eating you up? What is the personal fear that you can't resolve and you can't tolerate? Are you getting old with fucking NOTHING to show for it? Then, write Invisible Monsters. Are you worried that your brain or talent isn't capable of creating anything interesting or unique, and you'll die and rot and be forgotten - failing everyone you love? Well, then write Diary. My point is, use the story to explore and exhaust an issue of your own. Otherwise, you're just dicking around playing "let's pretend." If you can be ruthless and honest about your own fear, r, you express something that other people can't express. You can resolve your own anxiety - through research, discussion, experiment - and that freedom is what brings you back to writing. What could you never talk about in a million years? Then, write about that."
"People don't want their lives fixed.
Nobody wants their problems solved.
Their dramas.
Their distractions.
Their stories resolved.
Their messes cleaned up.
Because what would they have left?
Just the big scary unknown."
"The first step - especially for young people with energy and drive and drive, but not money - the first step to controlling your world is to control your culture. To model and demonstrate the kind of world you demand to live in. To write the books. Make the music. Shoot the films. Paint the art."
"What makes the Earth feel like Hell is our expectation that it ought to feel like Heaven.
Earth is earth. Hell is hell.
Now, stop the whining and caterwauling."
- Chuck Palahniuk
Instead of spending my next $30 on a new dress I'm gonna get my hands on a new book.
Been doing research on Palahniuk and the reviews of his books are intriguing.
I've read that one of his books, Haunted, made 53 people faint during one of his live readings.
Well, of course I wouldn't be able to take that because I can't even get by a horror story told by a friend.
While reading reviews and summaries of his books my heart was thumping and there's this burning sensation in it. It's like I'm REALLY scared to read but I really want to know what goes through his head. I wish someone will read it with me and y'know be scared yet fascinated together.
Maybe I'll start with Fight Club.
